Places to Visit in Hungduan, Ifugao

There are many blogs, videos, and articles about Hungduan’s top spots, but here are some places you shouldn’t miss:

Bogyah Hot Spring

Bogyah Hot Spring is one of the most popular destinations in Hungduan. With the area’s cool climate, soaking in warm water is a perfect way to relax. The best time to visit is early in the morning, around 6 to 7 AM, when the air is fresh and the surroundings are peaceful.

According to the Hungduan Tourism Office, the hot spring’s temperature is around 39–40°C, similar to the midday heat in Tuguegarao. The warm water is soothing and rich in sulfur, which is believed to help with certain skin conditions, stress, and body pains. Large boulders surround the hot spring, making it a great spot for sunbathing. Nearby, the Hapao River offers cool waters, so you don’t have to worry about overheating.

One of the exciting aspects of visiting Bogyah Hot Spring is the one-hour hike to get there. The trail offers stunning views, fresh air, and a calming atmosphere, making the journey enjoyable.

Hungduan Rice Terraces

The Hungduan Rice Terraces are one of the main highlights of the area. When we visited in April, the rice fields were lush and green, creating a breathtaking landscape. The scenery is incredibly relaxing, as all you see is nature’s beauty in its purest form.

These terraces are a source of pride for the locals and truly showcase the incredible work of nature and human ingenuity. Visiting Hungduan feels like a “Triple Treat” experience—stunning rice terraces, a rejuvenating hot spring, and the serene river surrounding the area. The clear, cold water is refreshing, especially when you dip your feet in. It’s the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Punnuk Festival – A Post-Harvest Celebration

The Punnuk Festival is an annual event in Hungduan, held every August to mark the end of the harvest season. The festival features a traditional tugging ritual called “punnuk”, which takes place in the Hapao River.

This celebration highlights a season of thanksgiving and cleansing after a bountiful harvest. Various traditional games take place in the strong river currents, including Bultong (wrestling), Ginuyod (tug-of-war), and Upuhan (underwater breathing competition). Before the games, a ritual leader called Munggopah recites a prayer to the gods, asking for blessings for a successful cultural ceremony.

The Punnuk Festival marks the conclusion of the rice harvest and serves as a vibrant display of Ifugao culture. When we visited, the festival had not yet started, so we didn’t get to experience it firsthand. However, it is something to look forward to. It’s truly enjoyable to join the villagers in their celebrations, especially in their exciting traditional games!

Lion’s Head

Just like Baguio has its famous Lion’s Head, Hungduan also has a mini version of this landmark. It’s located along the roadside and is easy for tourists to visit.

One of the best things about this spot is the nearby natural spring, where you can wash your face or even take a quick dip. The water is ice-cold and crystal clear, providing a refreshing break from your journey. The sound of flowing water adds to the peaceful atmosphere, making it a great place to relax and take photos, especially with its colorful design.

Food in Hungduan

One of the best things about Hungduan’s food is the freshness of its vegetables. This is something you won’t easily experience in the city, where food is often dependent on preservatives. The natural flavors of their freshly harvested produce make every meal incredibly delicious.
