Why the DJI Mini 3 Pro Is Still My Favorite Hobby Drone in 2025

The DJI Mini 3 Pro was first released on May 10, 2022. Before that, many drone hobbyists loved the DJI Mini 2 for its great specs at an affordable price. When the Mini 3 Pro came out, it brought major upgrades to the Mini series — especially better camera features and obstacle sensors.

Later that year, on December 9, 2022, DJI released the standard Mini 3. Unlike other brands like Apple, DJI released the Pro version first. The biggest difference between the Mini 3 and Mini 3 Pro is the obstacle avoidance system — which the standard Mini 3 doesn’t have.

Then, in September 2023, DJI launched the Mini 4 Pro. Its main upgrade is the omnidirectional obstacle avoidance, which means it can detect obstacles in all directions — forward, backward, downward, upward, and sideways. The Mini 3 Pro only detects in front, back, and below — not sideways.

So here’s my question: if I already own a Mini 3 Pro, should I spend an extra $150 or more just to get the side sensors in the Mini 4 Pro? For me, no. Even if DJI allowed a trade-in (which they don’t), I wouldn’t pay the extra just for that. But for beginners, side sensors can really help avoid crashes. If you’re buying your first drone, it might be worth it.

Why the DJI Mini 3 Pro Is Still Great for Hobbyists

1. Lightweight and Travel-Friendly

It weighs under 250g, which means no registration is needed in many countries. That makes it easier to carry and fly legally when traveling.

2. Solid 4K Video and Vertical Shooting

The Mini 3 Pro supports 4K video up to 60fps, and it has a vertical shooting mode, perfect for social media. This is something the Mini 2 didn’t have.

3. Excellent Battery Life

With the Fly More Combo, I got three batteries. Flight time can go from 34 to 47 minutes, depending on the battery used. DJI says it can go up to 51 minutes with the Plus battery — though in real life, it’s slightly less.

4. Beginner-Friendly Flight Experience

Many beginners buy cheap drones to practice, but I think DJI drones are easier to fly — even more stable than some low-cost ones. My first drone was the Mavic Mini (2019). It lasted three years before I upgraded to the Mini 3 Pro, and I sold it in good condition. DJI drones are known for reliability and easy controls.

Ideal for Hobbyists Like Me

For casual flyers like me, the DJI Mini 3 Pro is still the best drone in 2025. It’s portable, powerful, and easy to use — perfect for weekend adventures or travel vlogs.

When Should You Upgrade?

Only consider upgrading if you’re getting serious — like filming for cinematic projects or high-end event coverage. But for content like weddings, fiestas, travel videos, or promo content for resorts, the Mini 3 Pro is still more than enough.

If you don’t own a drone yet, and you’re planning to buy one in 2025, I recommend the Mini 4 Pro. It’s more expensive, but you’ll get the most updated features.

DJI Remote Controllers – What’s the Difference?

There are 3 types of remotes for the Mini series:

RC-N1 – No screen; you use your phone. Price: ~$160
DJI RC – Built-in screen, no external antennas. Price: ~$310
DJI RC Pro – High-end with antennas, advanced features. Price: ~$1,200

I use the DJI RC with my Mini 3 Pro. It’s more convenient without needing a phone, and it works great for my needs.

    Final Thoughts

So for me, the DJI Mini 3 Pro is still the best hobby drone in 2025. The improvements in the Mini 4 Pro aren’t enough for me to upgrade right now. Spending around $1,099 again for minor upgrades doesn’t make sense — unless you’re a beginner buying your first drone. In that case, Mini 4 Pro is a smart choice.
